Eskimo Information

Susie's Eskimos kennel located in scenic rural Ontario, Canada, is devoted to breeding and raising beautiful, happy and healthy American Eskimo puppies. Our Eskimo Dogs live in the country with 50 acres play in. They thrive on the fresh country air and plenty of bush and trail that they run through for exercise. As highly responsible breeders, we pride ourselves on both the quality of the puppies that we produce - and the quality of the homes into which they are placed. We raise our puppies with lots of love and attention. They are socialized from birth with both adults and children, producing dogs with wonderful temperaments that are great with kids. Our dogs make exceptional family pets - we have some very happy customers with beautiful American Eskimos!  for loving, responsible owners.

We are careful to ensure that all of our dogs are in good health and free from hereditary disorders. Puppies are vet-checked, vaccinated and de-wormed before they are placed with their new owners. We are proud members in good standing of the National American Eskimo Club of Canada and the United Kennel Club.

What is an American Eskimo Dog?

American Eskimo Dogs are often called "Spitz", however, "Spitz" is not a breed of dog, but rather a group of breeds with similar characteristics. Some of the other breeds included in the Spitz group are Keeshonden, Finnish Spitz, and Pomeranians. The preferred nickname for the breed is "Eskie".

American Eskimo Dogs are highly intelligent and make wonderful companion animals. Eskies have white or cream colored coats and come in standard (15"-19" - at shoulder), miniature (12"-15"), and toy (9"-12") sizes.

Additional Eskimo Information

The American Eskimo Dog breed was developed in the United States from the Spitzes of Northern Europe. They usually have distinctive black noses, lips and eyelids. As a Nordic-type dog, Eskies have a double coat, plume-like curled tail, and erect triangular ears. They are often mistaken as a small or mixed Samoyed.

The Eskie coat naturally repels dirt and odor. The amount of coat can vary with age, health, nutrition, and temperature. Eskies generally shed twice a year with the change of the seasons. There is some year round shedding, which is minimized by proper diet and grooming. Regular brushing is recommended to prevent matting.

American Eskimo Dogs are inherently companion dogs. They are happiest when they are with their guardians, and when treated as a family member. Eskies are intelligent, loving, and can be wonderful watchdogs. They are a long lived breed - some living 18-20 years. Eskies are quick to alert the family of the arrival of strangers at their house. Properly socialized, Eskies can be excellent with children.

Eskies require human companionship and loving attention. They are not a dog to be ignored. Left alone too much they may become bored, destructive, and bark excessively. Harsh training techniques are inappropriate for American Eskimo Dogs. They are a challenging, mentally active, and delightful breed. With positive reinforcement training and attention, American Eskimo Dogs learn quickly and are eager to please.

Customer Testimonials

Hello – we thought we should send you an update on one of your absolutely, positively beautiful puppies – Taz!! I said to Mike the other day “this wonderful dog is saving your life!” Mike has diabetes and tends towards high cholesterol but the walks two times per day with his pal – and they go on very long walks! – is having a wonderful effect on both. And of course, Taz knows exactly when they are supposed to go and won’t let “Dad” forget! I think it is great.

We have been very careful with feeding Taz only his food so he seems very healthy. He gets no human food – except the odd lettuce leaf which he “jumps” to get. I can’t believe how high he can jump! We are determined to keep him at his current weight which is just over 20 lbs. He has such strong legs and is so active. Also, is quite the sweetie! Even the vet can’t believe how fortunate we are with Taz .Thank you for breeding such wonderful dogs.

Just a note to let you know that Dosie is a wonderful addition to our family. She is the most lovable creature we have ever owned. She is now about 25 pounds and six months old.

She is bright, alert and just as playful as she can be. She continues to be a climber, with her favorite perch being around our neck. She fetches and comes to us on a consistent basis. She is house trained and sleeps in her kennel. She goes to the office with us daily and looks forward to her day at work.

Dosie craves attention so deeply and must begin each new day with hugs from both of us. Her ability to climb never ceases to amaze us. She drags boxes around to use as step stools to her latest find.

Just wanted to update you on our wonderful family member. Thanks so much for breeding such a delightful creature. We look forward to enjoying the snow with her.
